            Math and Arithmetic

Math is the study of abstractions. Math allows us to isolate one or a few features such as the number, shape or direction of some kind of object. Then we can study what can be learned about the behavior of those features while ignoring everything else about the object.

            What are negative ligands?

            User Avatar
Any negatively charged species that is able to donate its lone pair to the metal is called a negative ligand. For example, Cl- , Br-, SO4-2, C2O4-2. The name of the ligand will end with O (i.e. sulphate will become sulphato, nitrite will become nitrito etc.)

Why is milk measure in gallons and not by liter?

            User Avatar
We all use basic arithmetic (+ - / *) in everyday life, and reading powers and scientific notation is useful for things like programming and reading some national geographic magazines and what not. The Pythagorean theorem is useful for some things. But I don’t understand how quadratic equations, calculus, radical expressions, sequences/series, and imaginary and complex numbers are used in everyday life. What are some REAL, USEFUL applications of these things?

What does I read you 5 by 5 mean?

            User Avatar
In voice procedure (the techniques used to facilitate spoken communication over two-way radios) a station may request a report on the quality and strength of signal they are broadcasting. In the military of the NATO countries, and other organizations, the signal quality is reported on two scales; the first is for signal strength, and the second for signal clarity. Both these scales range from one to five, where one is the worst and five is the best. The listening station reports these numbers separated with the word "by". Five by five therefore means a signal that has excellent strength and perfect clarity ? the most understandable signal possible. Five by five by extension has come to mean "I understand you perfectly" in situations other than radio communication, the way Loud and Clear entered slang, post-WW2.

How do you solve 2 sin squared theta equals 1?

            User Avatar
first divide each side by 2 so you get... sine^2(X)=1/2 Then make sine ^2(X)=sine(x^2) SO you get... sine(X^2)=1/2 Then take the sine^-1 of each side it will look like this X^2=sine^-1(1/2) type the right side into a calc which will give you a gross decimal but it works (0.5235987756) so now you have X^2=0.5235987756 then take the square root of each side to make it linear and you will get X=.7236012546 and that is your answer!!!! make sure to check it on your calculator...I did and it worked * * * * * Not quite correct, I fear. Try this: Let s = sin θ. Then, 2s2 = 1; s2 = ½; and s = ±½√2. Therefore, θ = 45°, 135°, 225°, or 315°; or, if you prefer, θ = ¼π, ¾π, 1¼π, or 1¾π.

Why the power factor is not more than unity?

            User Avatar
The power factor is defined as the cosine of an angle. (It's the phase angle between voltage and current.) The magnitude of the cosine is never greater than ' 1 '. The theory of Unity Gain states that you cannot get more out than you put in. If the current maximum of a cycle lags (or leads) the voltage maximum by a fraction x of a cycle, then if you think of the situation where the voltage and current are rotating vectors at an angle x degrees apart, then the only useful power is gained by the component of the current which is in phase with the voltage. So, resolve the current vector into two components, one in the direction of the voltage vector, (Icos(x)) and the other component perpendicular the the voltage vector, (Isin(x)). Then the useful power is gotten by multiplying the bits of voltage and current which are in phase: V times I cos(x). So the power obtained is a factor cos(x) down on the value if V and I were in perfect sync. That's why it's called power factor. It is why Power stations don't like inductive or capacitative loads: they have to supply heavy currents that actually deliver no power. Finally, cos(x) never gets above 1.

How many cubic feet are in a gallon?

            User Avatar
Gallons per cubic foot 1 cubic foot = 7.4805 US gallons 1 cubic foot -=6.2288 Imperial gallons One cubic foot is equal to 7.4805 US Gallons, -6.2288 Imperial Gallons Also, 1 cubic foot = 1728 cubic inches 1 US gallon = 231 cubic inches (by definition) 1 cubic foot = 1728/231 gallons = 576/77 gallons ~= 7.48 gallons 1 US gallon = 231/1728 cubic feet ~= 0.133681 cubic feet Sample Water Bill Calculation Assumptions: Note: . This refers to 100 cubic feet. If your bill says you used 10 ccf, that would be 1000 cubic feet, or almost 7500 US gallons. Also: "Water bills" can also include other costs such as sewer and trash collection. Read your bill closely to determine exactly what you're paying for.

            What does number three mean?

            User Avatar
3-Is the number of personal completeness, It is the number of the Godhead,it stands for the triune God. It is formed by 1 plus 1 plus plus 1. But if the 1's are multplied, the result is still 1. So that God is 3in1 and 1 and 3. In geometry two lines do not make a cube. Hence 2 is an incomplete number while 3 is the first complete number. It therefore represents God. 3 is also a number of resurrection, The Lord Jesus is resurrected on the third day. Jonah was in the belly of the fish for 3 days. The restoration of the nation of Israel is also connected with the numeral 3.This number 3 is frequently related to God, the triune is used in the baptizism, The Lord Jesus was tempted 3 times, He prayed in the garden 3 times, he asked Peter 3 times if he loved him and to feed his sheep. When God judged mans sin in Chirst Jesus the heavens and the earth were dark for 3 hrs.

How do you do recurring decimals to a percentage?

            User Avatar
Multiplying decimals by 100 will convert them to percentages. If you wish to remove the recurring decimal, convert it to a fraction by putting the recurring digit(s) as the numerator over a denominator of the same number of 9s and reducing the fraction to its lowest terms. Examples 0.333333333... To a percentage: 0.333333333... x 100 = 33.3333333...% 0.3333333... as a fraction: repeating digit is 3 so put as the numerator over a denominator of one 9 to give the fraction 3/9 = 1/3 So 0.333333333... = 33 1/3 % 0.1428571428... To a percentage: 0.1428571428... x 100 = 14.28571428...% 0.28571428... as a fraction: repeating digits are 285714 of which there are six, so put as numerator over a denominator of six 9s to give the fraction 285714/999999 = 2/7 So 0.1428571428... = 14 2/7 %

Sounds like a way of distinguishing how absurd, or possibly devastating, an outcome may be as a result of some action. Were you reading Popular Science and came across the "What Could Possibly Go Wrong" article? If so, I believe that is what they were indicating with the Folly Meter. The higher the number, the more absurd or disastrous the outcome of some action.
